Description

General Description

CHAPS is a zwitterionic surfactant used in the laboratory to solubilize biological macromolecules such as proteins. It has both hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties. It can be used for the solubilization of membrane proteins. It combines the properties of both, sulfobetaine-type and bile-acid detergents. Both CHAPS and CHAPSO have low light absorbance in the ultraviolet region of the electromagnetic spectrum, which is useful for monitoring ongoing chemical reactions or protein-protein binding with UV/Vis spectroscopy.
